We are seeking an experienced candidate to help build a world class hub providing independent, trusted and rigorous evidence on screen skills needs for use by the screen sector. The role must ensure this evidence is publicly available to industry, policymakers, trainers and education, in order to support a responsive skills system that keeps the UK screen sector internationally competitive.
Over the last eighteen months, Creative Skillset, has under new leadership reshaped the organisation and refocused our strategy on the screen industries – clarifying our purpose and value.
Our mission is to lead on building inclusive skills and talent to achieve a world beating UK screen industries sector.
We have a new industry Chair and our Board and Advisory Councils comprise committed senior industry leaders from across the screen sector – film, television, visual effects, animation and games – representing large and small organisations across the UK.
Skills forecasting is a new function for Creative Skillset and will offer the successful candidate an exciting opportunity to set up and shape effective skills forecasting during a period of opportunity, growth and transformation e.g. the Apprenticeship levy, the technical education reforms, need for a step change in inclusivity and preparing for a post Brexit world.
The Head of Research is an influential role that will suit someone who is passionate about screen, understands the significance of vocational skills development, and wants to to play a pivotal role in building and delivering a high-impact and effective skills forecasting system. It offers a good range of projects to work on.
To build a world-class hub providing independent, trusted and rigorous evidence on screen skills needs for use by the screen sector. The role must ensure this evidence is publicly available to industry, policymakers, trainers and education, in order to support a responsive skills system that keeps the UK screen sector internationally competitive.
Furthermore, the role will understand and assess an effective outcome based approach and build a framework that enables efficiency and effectiveness.
- Lead on the creation of an industry owned skills forecasting system by shaping the methodology, and working with industry to overcome current shortcomings with data.
- Work with key industry leads, plus national and international screen agencies, trade associations and wider screen sector stakeholders to design and undertake regular skills surveys.
- Turn data into easy to understand charts and reports, identifying trends and communicating insight, ensuring that the screen industry is informed of the skills and talent required in order make the best skills intervention decisions possible.
- Analyse and communicate insight and stories from data that will inform our screen skills strategy – e.g. film, HETV, TV, vfx, animation and games.
- Provide insight into the trends affecting the sector and the impact it has on skills needs.
- Regularly gather data from different available sources and turn it into easy to communicate compelling reports, charts and presentations.
- Provide summaries and insight to the team and our industry councils, the Board and relevant external stakeholders.
- Identify and manage research projects that support our overall strategic goals.
- Sit on relevant industry Steering Groups.
- Oversee research design, research management and data analysis (qualitative and quantitative) and provide data quality assurance.
- Produce and track Key Performance Indicators.
- Develop and support reporting processes.
- Provide industry benchmarking.
- Manage the Research Analyst and monitor the research budget to ensure that services provided are within agreed financial limits and that value for money is delivered.
- Develop and maintain contacts with a wide range of external bodies; including partner organisations, government officials and other trade bodies.

Essential skills and experience
- Strong analytical skills, including experience in data collection, management and manipulation of large datasets including ONS data, industry intelligence and management information (MI).
- Proven ability to synthesise a wide range of quantitative and qualitative evidence, identifying clear findings and drawing insight that can inform decisions that are accessible to a broad audience, increasing consensus and challenging assumptions.
- Experience in writing of reports, critiques, briefings and think pieces, as well as wider communication activities e.g. tweets and blogs etc.
- Proven commitment to delivering high quality analysis and written outputs that ensure customer satisfaction, with experience in data validation and implementing methods to ensure quality and accuracy.
- Three years of experience as a senior researcher.
- Strong influencing and stakeholder management skills.
- Good organisational and project management skills, with the ability to work effectively to support the delivery of a number of programmes in order to meet deadlines.

- Excellent communication and presentation skills.
- Proactive, fresh thinking with a passion for the industry.
